Ethiopia tightens grip on tax collection amid disinformation campaign

Addis Ababa, November 05, 2021 — Ethiopia State of Emergency (SoE) task force officially began its operation today as per the State of Emergency Proclamation No. 5/2014. One of its first decisions is to ensure businesses pay their taxes on time without paying attention to disinformation campaigns.

"This is the time of paying your taxes. We want to inform businesses to pay their taxes properly and on time to help the country they love in the same way others are sacrificing their lives for their country," said the task force.

Accordingly, during the SoE meeting held today, the task force made three key decisions.

The task force suspended indefinitely the provision of National IDs throughout Ethiopia. The task force came to this conclusion because it said it found out counterfeit IDs being produced in Amhara, Oromia and Addis Ababa.

The SoE task force ordered all unregistered weapons to be registered and licensed within a week.

The task force warned businesses not be swayed by disinformation and ensure paying their taxes on time. It ordered security forces to take measures on those who are spreading disinformation and encouraging businesses to evade paying taxes.

This fear among businesses in Addis may have come after the US' unnecessary call to its citizens to leave Ethiopia coupled with CNN's irresponsible headline telling the world that the terrorist forces are in the outskirts of Addis Ababa.
