“Countries must adhere to the principle of non-interference in other's internal affairs” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

PM Abiy Ahmed

Addis Ababa, November 25, 2020 – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged countries to adhere to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of others. He said Ethiopia is a country with a long history and is one of the founding members of the United Nations. He recalled that the African Union has been a pioneer in the past.

His comments come after the United Nations Security Council set up an informal meeting on Ethiopia’s operation in Tigray yesterday which was cancelled due to African countries preference for the issue to be handled by the African Union. Nevertheless, the meeting went on with pressures from European countries.

The Prime Minister in his statement extended his appreciation to the international community to assist in the ongoing law enforcement operation and but warned that this must be done in accordance with international law.

He added that for almost 3 years TPLF has been working to frustrate the democratization process by orchestrating violent attacks by training, arming and financing criminal elements to target ethnic and religious minorities in different part of the country.

“In an act of treason, TPLF leadership launched an attack against the Northern Command of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF). They also brutally massacred 600 innocent civilians in the town of Mai Kadra” said the Prime Minister.

He explained further that the intent of the rule of law operations carried out by government is to defend and preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the state of Ethiopia to restore law and order throughout its territory and bring the perpetrators of the criminal act to justice.

The Prime Minister disclosed that the government of Ethiopia is operating with due care for the protection of the civilian population and to minimize the humanitarian cost of the crises exacerbated by the TPLF.

Finally he mentioned that he considers the concerns and advice of friends but rejects any undue interference in the country’s internal affairs.
