African Heads of State decide to hold the 35th AU Assembly in Addis Ababa after concerns

ADDIS ABABA, JANUARY 16, 2022 – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed thanked African Heads of State for coming into consensus to hold the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly in Addis Ababa which will take place from 05th to 06th February 2022.

This message from the Ethiopian Prime Minister comes after the attempt to shift the 35th AU assembly out of Ethiopia, for fear of security issues, failed to bear fruit.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a statement that now is the time to strengthen the African brotherhood more than ever.

“My dear African brothers and sisters, I want to express to you that Ethiopia has never failed from prioritizing African affairs from its agenda. Ethiopia’s commitment to Africa’s freedom has never dwindled. Her role in Pan-Africanism is always a major one. Ethiopia has always been the same from the past to the present. She has never had second thoughts on being African. Ethiopia lauds the current African Heads of State for deciding to hold the AU assembly here. This is a decision tantamount to the previous African Heads of State who never doubted Ethiopia’s position on Africa.”, said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

PM Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia is saddened by those who attempted to hold the AU’s 35th assembly elsewhere citing COVID-19 and security concerns.

He said the Ethiopian government has been putting in diplomatic efforts to hold the bi-annual AU assembly in Addis Ababa after the first had been suspended due to COVID-19 for three consecutive years.

African Heads of State who recognized Ethiopia’s firm commitment to African affairs, its effort to form the AU and its firm principle to resolve African affairs through Africans have understood the relevance of holding the assembly here, said PM Abiy Ahmed.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also advised Ethiopians to welcome their African brethren who see Ethiopia as their second home.

He said Ethiopia will be a winner only if it succeeds in all sectors. One of these sectors, he said, is the promise Ethiopia gave to Africa which must be sustained.

Another Mosque Demolished in Ethiopia as Regional Government Denies Targeting Mosques

ADDIS ABABA – Oromia Regional Government said in a statement today that the demolishing of illegal housing taking place in the newly formed Shaggar City does not target Mosques. This statement came amid the destruction of another Mosque at Ajamba, at the outskirt of west Addis Ababa. In the statement, the regional government stated that the demolishing of illegal houses is planned to take place around 600 cities in Oromia. "Some groups are painting as if the demolishing of illegal houses targets one single religion", said Hailu Adugna, Communication Office Head, Oromia region. "When we are implementing this decision, many interest groups are disseminating information as if we are targeting one ethnicity and one religion. This is wrong.", said Hailu Adugna.
