ADDIS ABABA, JANUARY 26, 2022 - Ethiopia's Speaker of House of People's Representative (HoPR), Tagesse Chafo, announced today that his office has selected 42 individuals out of the 632 nominees presented by Ethiopians for the Commissioner position of the National Dialogue Commission.
However, the selection process was not elaborated and the 632 and the 42 nominees were not identified. Nonetheless, Tagesse Chafo said they were nominated by citizens from all regions of the country and that his office has found most of the nominees with the required experience and education to shoulder the responsibilities of the Commissioner positions, which will be eleven.
The draft proclamation initially assigned the power to appoint a Commissioner for the National Dialogue Committee to the Prime Minister which is according to the Constitution. However, after feedback from stakeholders and the public, the power to select from the public nominations was assigned to the Office of the Speaker of Parliament. In this way it was believed the independence of the Commission would not be compromised.
On the coming week, the qualifications of the 42 nominees' will be presented for discussions with political parties, civic societies and religious leaders. It will be after these meetings that the final 11 Commissioners will be publicly announced.
Moreover, it was in October last year that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed first announced that his government will
conduct an all inclusive national dialogue.
And on December 10, the Council of Ministers approved the draft law to establish
a National Dialogue Commission and submitted their decision to parliament. And the Ethiopian Parliament, after discussions with stakeholders and the public on December 20 and December 25, approved the draft proclamation for the establishment of the National Dialogue Commission.
