The National Dialogue Commission awaits 2nd round public discussions

 


ADDIS ABABA, DECEMBER 22, 2021 — Following the decision of the Council of Ministers to establish a National Dialogue Commission, on December 10, the Ethiopian House of People's Representative (HoPR) before making the final approval of the draft proclamation conducted first round discussions, on December 20, with stakeholders and it has also decided to involve the public and there by conduct second round discussions at the HoPR this Saturday, December 25.

The public discussion will commence Saturday morning 9am EAT and citizens are called to contribute by attending in person or by sending their comments by phone to the Ethiopian parliament.

On the first round discussions, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), opposition political parties and many other civic organizations attended the discussions.

Dr. Gideon Timothewos, Ministry of Justice, led the discussions mentioning the aim of the draft proclamation and the responsibilities of the commission.

According to the draft proclamation, the establishment of the commission is necessary due the presence of differences of opinions and disagreements among various opinion leaders and segments of society in Ethiopia on the most fundamental national issues and it is a necessity to alleviate and resolve the differences and disagreements through broad based inclusive public dialogue that engenders national consensus. 

Birtukan Mideksa, Director of NEBE, pointed out, during the discussions, the need to cautiously determine the people that are going to lead the national dialogue so as to maintain independence and provide reliable results.

Yeshiwas Asefa, leader of EZEMA party, said the commission's powers should not be restricted. He said the commission must have the authority to impose challenges on the government.

Furthermore, participants raised concerns regarding the independence of the commission with regards to Article 9/10 of the draft proclamation where it says the National Commission will submit a report on the agenda of the national dialogue, the process of the dialogue and recommendations that came out of the national dialogue.

Thousands Attend Funeral For Four Muslims Killed By Police In Addis Ababa

                                           ADDIS ABABA – Thousands of Muslims gathered today for the funeral of Anwar Surur, Zubair Mudasir, Ibrahim Danbal and Jemil Redwan killed by police in Addis Ababa following Juma'a Friday Prayers at the Grand Anwar Mosque. Another Mosque Demolished in Ethiopia as Regional Government Denies Targeting Mosques

                                      ADDIS ABABA – Oromia Regional Government said in a statement today that the demolishing of illegal housing taking place in the newly formed Shaggar City does not target Mosques. This statement came amid the destruction of another Mosque at Ajamba, at the outskirt of west Addis Ababa.
