1.5 million students are out of school due to TPLF’s invasion of parts of Amhara region

Addis Ababa, October 14, 2021 — According to Getachew Beyazen, Deputy Head of the Amhara Regional State Education Bureau, during his interview with VOA Amharic, said that more 1.5 million students are forced to be out of school in four zones of the Amhara region such as North Wollo, North Gonder, Wag Himra, parts of South Wollo and parts of South Gonder due to the war spearheaded by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a group branded a terrorist by the Ethiopian parliament.

“More than 1.5 million students have dropped out of school as a result of the TPLF invasion”, said Getachew. In addition, 277 schools were completely destroyed by the TPLF and more than 1,300 schools were partially damaged. However, school equipments, supplies and other materials were stolen and/or destroyed.

Nevertheless, the Amhara region education bureau said it has created conducive environment for displaced students to continue their education. Getachew Beyazen also said since the students came without their certificates, efforts are being made to ensure that these displaced students are enrolled without preconditions at any of the schools that are closer to them. Meanwhile, East Gojjam Zone has received 235 students so far this month, according to the zonal education office of Amhara region.

"It seems like the TPLF terrorist group does not want to see educated people in Amhara which is why it is intentionally targeting and destroying schools", said the Amhara Education Bureau. "It has looted computers, laptops, plasma screen, photocopy machines, destroyed VSAT and lab equipment", added the bureau head.

The Ministry of Education has so far allotted about 100 million ETB to help in the rebuilding of more than three thousand schools.
